TENSPORTSZONE – US Defense Secretary Putin Gives Up Conquering Ukraine’s Capital
Washington DC (USA) Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says Russian President Vladimir Putin has given up on conquering Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, after his troops faced fierce Ukrainian military resistance.
“Putin thought he could very quickly take over the Ukrainian state, very quickly capture the capital. He was wrong,” Austin said during a meeting with the Senate Armed Services Committee in the US Congress, as reported by AFP, Friday April 8 2022.
“I think Putin has given up on his efforts to seize the capital and is now focusing on the south and east of the country,” Austin said.
As for the overall direction of the war about six weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley said at the same meeting that it was still unclear.
Milley stated that in order to ‘win’ the battle, Ukraine had to remain a free and independent nation, with its recognized territories intact. “It will be very difficult. It will be very hard work,” he said.
“The first part may have been launched successfully,” Milley said, referring to the invasion of Ukraine on February 24. “However there is significant fighting to be fought in the southeastern region, around the Donbas where the Russians intend to deploy mass troops and continue their offensive,” he added.
“So I think it’s an open question now, how does this end,” he said.
Austin also told members of Congress that the US would provide the Ukrainian military with intelligence to support the fighting in the Donbas, which is controlled by pro-Russian separatists and now has direct support from the Russian army.
