TENSPORTSZONE – The ways in which Russia invaded Ukraine were reminiscent of the atrocities of Nazi Germany at the time. Europe can only achieve peace, if the Russian war criminals suffer military defeats. Opinion of DW editor Eugen Theise.
Bucha, Irpin, Gostomel, Mariupol, Trostianets are the names of places in Ukraine that symbolize the horrors of the war of Russian aggression, and the list goes on and on.
The man who had his hands tied behind his back, then executed with a direct shot to the head at close range, the woman who was shot dead while coming out of the dungeon cover. Bombed schools and hospitals – the indiscriminate killing of civilians, seems to be the hallmark of Russia’s actions against Ukraine in this war.

Social media was flooded with eyewitness testimony and gruesome images after the Ukrainian cities were liberated from Russian control.
One of the scenes of Russian barbarism, less internationally known than Mariupol or Bucha.
Permoha is about 50 kilometers east of Kyiv. The place was mostly demolished and looted after the month-long Russian occupation.
The story of suffering
Girls are very special. Before 1945, the place was called Yadlivka, and became a symbol of the atrocities of the occupying army. During World War II, German troops burned the village to the ground to punish the local population for supporting partisan resistance.
The village was rebuilt after the war and renamed Peremoha, which in Ukrainian means “victory”.

Six decades later, I as a student worked on a special project there for several years in summer camp, young Germans and Ukrainians working together to help rebuild the school in Peremoha.

My life experience and the reconciliation efforts that came with it helped shape me, along with many others in Germany and Ukraine.
Reconciliation and realizing the crimes of past generations, then together provide a special foundation for true friendship, step together towards the future, this is the best defense to ensure that the atrocities of the past are never repeated.
Friendship after reconciliation with Germany
I am glad that Germany and Ukraine are currently united by a friendship based on shared values such as democracy and freedom.

It is true that there have been criticisms of Germany’s gas deal with Russia, but Germany is now standing by Ukraine’s side at a time of great need, either by helping refugees or by supplying Ukraine with defense weapons.
Eight decades after Germany’s war in Ukraine, now Russia is destroying the country.
And like the German invaders decades ago, today’s invaders have no mercy for the civilian population.
For today’s Russia, Ukraine is a mortal enemy that needs to be removed because of their aspirations for freedom, and self-determination Russia views as an existential threat.
In the minds of most Russians, their lost empire has never ceased to exist.

According to the Levada Center, an independent Russian polling organization, 86% of Russians approve of what their soldiers are doing in Ukraine.
In a Stalinist society, as now being revived by Vladimir Putin, the so-called “enemy of the people” should receive the maximum possible punishment.
The Ukrainians knew this before the start of the war, also in Peremoha. Just 30 kilometers east on the outskirts of Kyiv, shortly before the start of World War II thousands of Ukrainians were shot dead after the Moscow regime under Josef Stalin declared them enemies.
Today, all Ukrainians are considered traitors and enemies if they do not submit and comfort the invaders.
Ukraine must win. How horrific the indiscriminate killing and looting by the invaders, the successful defense of Kyiv and other cities is inspiring.
The West must not turn away and must from supporting Ukraine at all costs, even when there is a threat of further escalation from Moscow.

Ukraine’s victory against Russian despots would be an opportunity for all of Europe.
In Ukraine, Europe’s peaceful future is at stake. Over the years, Moscow’s aggressive dictatorship and massive propaganda have led its own population to support the war.
The criminal regime tried to derive its legitimacy from the myth of the Soviet victory against Nazi Germany. If Russia wins, there will be no peace in Europe. Because while we in Europe have learned from the Second World War, that such horrors should never be repeated, in Russia the current popular motto is “we can do it again”.
Peremoha means “victory”. This ruined village will be rebuilt once again after the victory over Russia.
